So, today, I got a smartphone. I still don't quite know why, as I didn't really ask for one, but it's kinda cool I guess, maybe now I'll understand why people go apeshit over these, so I can whine to my parents that they gave me Model X instead of Y, haha... Anyways, that's not the point, the point is that I was browsing those apps stores earlier today and found Real Racing 3 for free. Now, I've heard several times already that RR 3 is a pretty cool game, and supposedly pretty advanced too, so, is it really free?

Kinja'd!!!

I mean, it's not a demo or anything right? Or it'll serve me a free lap and ask me to swipe a card to unlock the remaining 249? I take it micro transactions are a given though, like that Drag Racing game my old man had on his tablet, which was free but you could buy money or points to improve your cars... That game was fully playable without spending a single cent, what about Real Racing?

We'll, I used to play the game a lot, I own all the cars and via a in-app purchase jailbreak tweak, unlimited monies and credits. Very real. I personally prefer 2K Racing, but it doesn't have that nice of resolution. Android or iOS?

It's pretty much free. If you want your paginis and bugattis, you'll need to play a hell of a lot or pay. The latest versions have a lot less "fremium" stuff. The old versions had so many paywalls I intentionally made a "junker" Shelby mustang. That thing was fun.

Android, I don't know much about phones, but I know Driver is available for iOS, so if I'd gotten one, I'd be evading the cops right now, haha...

Yeah, if you aren't willing to pay a shit-load of money on in app purchases or play your life away to unlock stuff it gets old pretty quickly. The AI is a bit too aggressive also, so you pay quite a bit of in- game credits to fix it after each race. The graphics are epic though, it looks so good on the iPhone display.

So basically, it looks good, but the execution is poor in my opinion.

I used to play RR3 on my Android a lot. Everything is free, you can choose to buy stuff if you want in order to unlock cars quicker, get coins, etc. But that's no fun!

Either way, I ended up ditching the game because I spent too much time on it and trying to play a "racing sim" on your phone is less than ideal. What phone did you get? I had a LG Optimux 4X and it has a big screen for a phone. But I would still tap the wrong area and my car would go off-track on the last lap of a long race and I'd get really frustrated.

It's a Samsung Galaxy Win, at least that's what it says in the box. According to the store, it can run the game alright, otherwise it wouldn't even have been displayed, but I've yet to test it to be sure.

Yea, it should run the game. My problem was with the in-game controls.

I am terrible with tilt steering so I needed touch steering. There was only one control option like that and it had automatic acceleration, and you had to touch the centre of the screen to brake. First of all, this changes the way you drive quite a bit, because you're either braking or on the gas hard, no in between. Secondly, the game would sometimes register my desire to turn as intent to brake. So I'd come up to a corner, try to turn but I'd end up heading straight and slowing down. If you're ok with tilt steering then it shouldn't be so bad.

Step 1: Get Playstation 1 emulator for Android
Step 2: Get GranTurismo 2
Step 3: ?????
Step 4: Profit!

Real racing 3 is good and totally free but they try to annoy you into giving them money. As for people complaining about tilt steering it comes from how you hold your phone. I used to play on an iPod touch and was ok but I got a case with a battery pack that was oversized and shaped for gaming and it made me a lot better

That's a neat idea, but I already have it and GT1 on PC, and I think I'd rather play them with a controller, on a big old screen :p

I ran a few races, I think I'm already getting used to it. It's a little tiring though, but I'm thinking they updated the game with new controller options; there's tilt steering with and without auto throttle, and swipe steering with and without auto throttle, as well as the option to swap positions of the wheel and pedals.

I'm getting more or less along with the tilt steering + pedals option, though.

Fair point, although these days I'd rather look at Playstation 1 graphics on a small screen. :P

The emulator controls aren't lacking much, you can even have analogue. If you wanna go full monty, there are ways to hook up a game controller to your Android system.

Also, I'm told GT2 is much better than GT1, but I can't confirm that, since I'm still playing through 1. :)
